A Treadmill Test (TMT), also called an exercise stress test, helps doctors assess how your heart responds to physical activity. During the test, your heart rate, heart rhythm and blood pressure are monitored while you walk on a treadmill. Your doctor may recommend this test based on your symptoms, medical history or cardiac assessment.
Before the test, the healthcare team reviews your medical history and explains the procedure. ECG electrodes are attached to your chest to record your heart’s electrical activity, while your blood pressure and heart rate are monitored. You gradually walk on a treadmill as the exercise level increases according to the test protocol.
The test may be stopped if you develop symptoms, reach the planned exercise level or the supervising team identifies a reason to stop. After exercise, your heart activity continues to be monitored during recovery.
