Obesity and Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes and obesity rule health and well being. As per WHO, diabetes is escalating to be a major challenge in India, where 8.7% of individuals aged 20 to 70 years are currently afflicted by the condition. The World Obesity Federation's 2023 atlas anticipates that worldwide around 51% people will suffer from obesity in 12 years.

The main cause is the rapidly growing number of cases of obesity and other non-communicable diseases due to a variety of reasons, such as rapid urbanization, lack of physical activity, unwholesome diets, tobacco consumption and the increasing life expectancy. Obesity is a major contributing factor

High-risk ethnicity and a high propensity for central obesity predispose Indian people to a higher risk of type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome, even at lower levels of BMI. A national urban diabetes survey from six major cities in India found that the prevalence of diabetes in urban adults was 12.1% (9.3-16.6%) and that of IGT was 14% (8.6-29.8%).

Relation between Obesity and Diabetes?

As per several studies, Body Mass Index (BMI) is related to diabetes and insulin resistance. Obesity is commonly associated with higher levels of nonesterified fatty acids, glycerol, hormones, cytokines, and other contents which contribute to insulin resistance.

Interestingly, not everyone who suffers from Obesity gets into type 2 diabetes but there are high chances.

Prevention is better than cure -

By making healthy lifestyle changes such as eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and maintaining a healthy weight, people can reduce their risk for developing obesity and diabetes. Obesity is often seen as a problem of individual responsibility, but it has societal causes too. Unhealthy food environments, sedentary lifestyles and limited access to healthy food choices are all factors that contribute to the rise in obesity rates.
